Josh & Katie I Wedding

If there is such a thing as golfball size rain I saw it falling on my windshield, the morning of Josh and Katie's wedding. Huge thunder cracking in the distance and a sky as dark as night. However, nothing was going to damper the mood of this cute couples wedding day. Katie was all smiles when I arrived... completely happy, completely content. Today she was getting married and nothing else mattered; rain or shine this was going to be the best day of her life.

I don't know if grooms can get giddy but if they can Josh definitely was. He was so eager to see his bride, and could hardly take his eyes off of her the rest of the day.

Despite the dreary morning the sun came out and the day couldn't have been more perfect.

Jay & Michelle I Wedding

Michelle and Jay have known each other as friends for the last 2 years. They started dating in May [2011], by June they were engaged, now its July and they're married!

I've known Michelle for the past few years and never have I seen her so content and full of joy as she is now. The wedding day was beautiful, with an intimate ceremony outside of Michelle's parents house surrounded by their closest friends and family. A truly amazing day to be apart of.

As wonderful as the day was, Michelle's twin, Brittney and her family weren't going to be there because of a recent move to Montana and on top of that Brittney had just had a baby 2 months earlier. Michelle was bummed but they were going to be "live-streaming" the wedding to them so they could "be there".

Right after Michelle had gotten her wedding dress on, the bedroom door opened and two of her nieces from Montana peered through the door! The night before Brittney and her husband Nate had made the last minute decision to drive through the night with all four kids and surprise everyone. Despite one of their van tires blowing up at 3am, they arrived just an hour before the ceremony. It couldn't have been more perfect!

Reception was held near St. Anthony Main, at an old historic restaurant.

Kelli & Michael I Wedding

When I first met Kelli and Michael back in December it was obvious they were meant to be. Kelli had lived in Montana as a school teacher and Michael worked at a radio station living in Wyoming. They met on Eharmony and not long after Michael proposed to Kelli during a hike in Wyoming. Kelli said, "I love knowing that Michael is the one God had planned for me from the very beginning!" Its true, they really are perfect for each other.

Kelli & Michael, it was joy meeting you, and being apart of such a special day of your lives. Have a wonderful time in England!

Josh & Katie I Engagement

A few weeks ago a friend and I were talking about relationships and marriage. We were remarking on different couples; Observing that all of them were in love, we noticed that certain couples stood out in a different way. It was how they lived out their love for one another on a daily basis. Katie and Josh are one of those unique matches that entices the attention of everyone around them. When they glance at each other it's as if they share a secret that no one else could possibly understand. They work as a team balancing out each others strengths and weaknesses, becoming stronger together through the storms of life. Their love isn't an artificial love seen in the Bachelor or Big Love; instead it is deeper and grounded on a firm foundation. They are "living life" together.

Josh and Katie met during their first year of college [at the same school I attend]. They began spending more time together as the year went on. In May, I remember Katie coming into the dorm beaming after Josh had asked her out. Fast forward a few months to 1:30 A.M. the morning of Valentines Day, beaming even brighter as she came into the dorm, but this time with tears in her eyes and a diamond shimmering on her left hand. Engaged! When I asked Josh what he appreciated the most about Katie he looked at her and said, "I know this sounds dumb but I really love everything."

They're getting married in July and I cannot wait for their wedding but especially to see them start living life together.

So excited for Abby of Studio A Photo who is debuting her new brand and website today!! I was thrilled when she contacted me to take pictures of her for her new brand and website. We met in late October [just before the freezing temps and snow moved in] and had a fun time running around downtown. I immediately fell in love with her! She is probably one of the most joy filled, fun-loving people I have ever met.

These yellow flowers [commonly known as "billy balls"] really inspired her and became a huge part of her brand.

Finally, Abby wanted her brand to be "simple, stunning, and fun" I think that is exactly how it turned out and a perfect description of who she is as a person. This final image is a personal favorite from the whole shoot.

Simon & Kate I Wedding

When Amy Rae Photography invited me to photograph this wedding with her and began to tell me about the venues; I knew it was going to be beautiful! The whole day flowed seamlessly as Kate had everything planned down to the very last detail.

Loved the way they added a unique twist to their First Look.

The ceremony took place in the Nazareth Chapel on the Northwestern College campus.

The reception took place at the Calhoun Beach Club with so many stunning details.

And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. Scott & Robin I Wedding

This past August I had the privilege of second shooting with Leah Maria Photography. This beautiful wedding took place in the brides-sisters-backyard. The weather couldn't have been better. While Leah stayed with the bride I headed to a nearby hotel to photograph the groom getting ready.

After the ceremony we headed over to the reception inside a tent. The family had spent a lot of time on decorating and it definitely paid off.

In the midst of the reception we snagged Robin and Scott for some last pictures. Robin was ecstatic to be married.

I'm the Intern

Back in August, a feed from Gina Zeidler's profile popped up on my Facebook newsfeed...

"Looking for an intern. E-mail me for more details"

Of course, I e-mailed her back and to make a long story short just over a week later I was traveling to Gina's house for the first day of interning!

Gina and I have hit it off so well the last few weeks. I help her with anything and everything; getting packages together, occasional second shooting, running to Indigo Tea, organizing files, and much more. In return I get an inside look at her business, and she's helping me solidify my business/brand; getting it moving in the direction I want it to go.

Here is a picture of Gina [that I stole from her Facebook] during a recent tour she was on with Making Things Happen 2010. Isn't she gorgeous?!

Besides photography... I've fallen in love with her little pooch, Miah.

She also introduced me to one of my latest addictions... Chai. Can't get enough of it!

The internship has been so much fun. Gina literally never stops; she's one of the most driven and passionate people I know. She's creative, full of life, generous, and encouraging. Besides photography she does a little videography for fun. Is this girl talented or what? Here is a fall video she made of the two of us, back in October:

Cameron and Alyssa I Wedding

Their love is quiet and sincere. It's in the way he looks at her and the way she smiles at him. Their wedding day was beautiful. While the church was a hustle and bustle of activity, Cameron and Alyssa were calm and eager to simply soak up every moment of their special day. I'm so excited for them and what the future holds. Congratulations you guys!

Rose Senior 2010

I've known Rose for quite sometime. We grew up only blocks away from each other. Both our families were home-schooled so we'd have gym or science class together, go on field trips, etc..

I found this keeper the other day. Rose is 3rd in from the bottom left, and then there's me; 2 in from the top right. Gotta love that sweater, right?

Anyways! I cannot believe that she is already in her senior year! I was so excited when she asked me to take her senior pictures. We started the shoot off on a dirt road near her home.

Next, we went to one of Minnesota's beautiful lakes!

Right alongside the lake there was a nearby field with tall grass. It was the perfect place to finish.

The light was so perfect, and did I mention she brought along a beautiful scarf too? Yes, I have a slight obsession with scarves!

Summer Adventures

The summer is almost gone and maybe some of you have been wondering where I've been. Not doing photography, thats for sure.

Actually, I did a 10 week program with my school [AFLBS] called, Summer Teams. I was sent out on the North Barnabas team sponsored by the Home Missions department of the AFLC. Our purpose; traveling around to different churches doing Vacation Bible School and a few teen camps. It's been a whirlwind summer to say the least. Our travels brought us to Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin, Maryland, Minnesota, and North Dakota.

Here's my team [minus the snake of course]. I wouldn't have lasted the summer without the encouragement of these three amazing people.

Although this wasn't something I was eager to do I really felt that God wanted me to put my camera down for a summer and serve Him in the capacity of summer teams. Yes, I had to turn down a few weddings and other jobs but it was SO worth it. I met so many wonderful people and it was powerful watching God work in their lives.

Now that I'm back I feel rejuvenated, inspired, and ready to go!

Jeremiah and Andrea: Destination Wedding in Florida

When Jeremiah and Andrea called me three months ago about shooting their destination wedding in Florida, I was stoked! I mean who wouldn't wanna take three days to fly down to Florida, stay at a ritzy resort, lay in the sun, go swimming, eat good food, and take wedding pictures.

Seriously though, Jere and Andrea are GREAT! They're fun, genuine, and really just the perfect couple. I'm so glad I got to shoot their wedding.

New Additions

A few months ago I switched to Canon. When I bought my camera body [5d] I also purchased the 50mm 1.4. As great as the 50mm was, it didn't always give me the wide angles I needed so I decided it was time to add to my photography family.

Here's the newest addition... My 28mm 1.8! I've had it for a little over a week and I simply adore it! It gives me the wide angles I need with great depth of field.

Also, with a wedding in Florida fast approaching [yes, my first destination wedding!] I also needed to purchase a camera bag to use while shooting. This was an obvious choice... the Shootsac by Jessica Claire!

I've heard nothing but great things about this bag and now that I own one myself I can say that all the rumors are true. This bag is all its made up to be and more!

Hi all! It's 11:47pm on Tuesday night. I'm about to jump in the shower [yes, i'm one of those "i-like-showers-at-midnight" people]. But I just wanted to blog and say

Favorte Time of the Year

Merry Belated Christmas! I hope yours was as good as mine. This is my favorite time of the year. I try my best to celebrate all year long, and love listening to 102.9 because they start playing Christmas music in July! Well I'm not crazy enough to have Christmas decorations up all year long so I make sure to enjoy the Christmas decor as much as possible duing December!

If they sold Christmas trees in the summer, I'd be tempted to buy one.

I don't know where you were during Christmas but I was in Iowa and it was a very white Christmas, just like the movies.

It was beautiful, I could have taken pictures all day!

While we were in Iowa, Minnesota was getting snow too and there was tons left when we got home. Could I pass up an opportunity for a fun shoot in the snow? I couldn't!

The wedding couldn't have been better!

I got exceptionally excited as I drove up to the little white church on a hilltop, overlooking a gorgeous field.

Music, Shoes, and Shopping

I love life and randomness so thats what this post is about.

Personally, I'm not a fan of Halloween. But my sweet nanny family gave me flowers in honor of the holiday! They sit on my dresser and brighten up the whole room. There's something about flowers that just make my days better.

I can't stop listening to this CD. It came out on May 20. 2008 so it's not a new release, but it's great! I guarantee it won't be coming out of my CD player for awhile.

So I'm a poor college student but somehow I still find $$$ to go shopping. I guess I justify this by the fact that I got another job [it's only wednesday afternoon for two hours] but I'll ignore that fact and pretend I get more hours. So anyways Saturday afternoon my friends came back from Uptown and started raving about the HUGE sale that Urban was having. They convinced me to go and I found a necklace [$5], sweater [$10], and these shoes [$5]! Looking at these shoes they might not seem like the most comfortable thing but lemme tell you... LOOKS ARE DECIEVING! These are the most amazing shoes I've ever owned. I could wear them for the rest of my life and my feet would never hurt.

Two other things...

1. Urban miiiight be my new favorite store.

2. I'm declaring myself the Queen of Deals! Bragging? Hm... maaaybe.
At my school we have two banquets a year. The first one the girls throw in honor of the guys and the second the guys throw in honor of the girls! We had our first banquet last week. The theme was black and white and it was so much fun! You can see more pictures on my facebook profile.

Katy and her Violin

A few weeks ago Katy and I reunited at the Guthrie downtown for the last part of her senior session: pictures of her with her violin.

Violin is a huge part of Katy's life. She's played for over 9 years, thats more than half of her life!

Somedays she'd spend 2-4 hours practicing each day. Talk about commitment! No wonder I never excelled when it came to playing musical instruments. But let me tell ya, the hard work paid off. I had her play some songs while I took pictures and boy is she good!

Again, congrats on graduating!

An Early Christmas

Anyone who is already my friend on facebook has heard the exciting news. I finally got myself the dream of a camera...Canon 5d! I absolutely love it.

Obviously the minute I got that camera in my hands I wandered around the house taking pictures of random nothings [this excludes the picture of my sister of course!]...like my dog, the plant sitting on our kitchen table, my jeans and cookbooks.

Early Christmas Present #2:

I fiiiiinally got business cards!

I know I've said I love moo but I'm gonna say it again:

"I LOOOOOOVE MOO!"

They're just so fabulous. I can't wait to start handing out these cards!

Also I got a handy dandy holder for them so when I hand them out I'll look as cool as James Bond!

Now I'm back to eating starbursts [my favorite pastime] and studying for my last midterm... a test all the seniors have vowed no one can pass.

In recent weeks I've been able to do a few out of the ordinary photo shoots. I love it because it stretches me and forces me to be more creative.

A few months ago I became a nanny. I love it! Today my nanny girl had her riding lessons, and her Mom asked me to take some pictures!

Erik and Lynnea

The way he gazes at her. The way she laughs at his jokes. The way they look into each others eyes. It's love. And their love story is a fairy tale.

It all started one week at summer camp. She was a lifeguard, and he was the leader of a band camp. The last day they ate lunch together, but that was it. He said goodbye, left, and it was over. Or was it really? She knew something the moment she met him. She knew he was the one she was going to spend the rest of her life with. But he was gone.

The years dragged on. But Lynnea remained patient knowing deep down that she wouldn't be satisfied with anyone else because she had already met her match back at camp that one summer. Well, 7 long years later she got a letter in the mail and the years of patiently waiting had paid off! It was Erik telling her that he was in town and wanted to take her out to coffee.

So to make a long story short they got married last summer.

Okay so I know their love story is super cute but here's an even cuter part. They never had engagements pictures so they hired Melissa Oholendt to do a fun, casual, day after session. We did their photo session at the camp where they first met! Like I said... super cute, huh? It was their first time back since the summer when they had met.

As I drove to the church, rain clouds loomed overhead, and occasional raindrops fell on my windshield. But nothing had dampened the spirits inside the church when I arrived. As I entered the girls dressing room Katie stood glowing, as her little flower girl excitedly tugged on her dress staring at her as if she were a princess.

Craig was nervous but excited as he waited for his soon-to-be wife.

Dusting off the cobwebs

Hello Hello Hello!

I haven't updated in a long time, but from looking at my stat counter I know people are still daily checking my blog... THANK-YOU THANK-YOU THANK-YOU!!! I really can't say it enough, even if the only person checking is my Mom... it doesn't matter.

College has been nothing short of amazing. I love all my new friends. I love my classes. I love the dorm life. Of course there are some not-so-great things... finances, missing my family, homework, etc... But in the end I know it'll be worth it.

One of the reasons I haven't been updating is because my free trial with Lightroom 2.0 has run out and I haven't bought the "real" version yet. So now all my edited pictures are in Lightroom and I can't get to them. This is definitely a bummer since I have lots of amazing stuff I want to show all of you. I'm buying it soon though, so no worries.

In the meantime, I did I wedding with, Olivia Wagner, the night before moving into the my dormitory. The bride was really into vintage and it made for some amazing pictures! Oh my goodness, such a fun wedding.

My Favorite!

After shooting this wedding in particular I was able to come back with some images that were definitely "Julia Mary." I'm starting to define myself, and become more confident in my brand. This makes me so happy to say the least. I still have a long road ahead of me but now I feel confident knowing I'm headed in the right direction.

Other randomness

-I learned how to tweet from my phone so I'll be updating that more often.

-I'm very close to getting a Canon 5d. The thought of having to buy a body, lens, camera bag, memory and everything, [literally starting from scratch] does intimidates me. Much more than I'm willing to admit, but it'll be worth it in the end... I just know it!

- This note of randomness is for teachers, my mom, and Grammar-Spelling-Geeks....

I know this update has grammatical errors oozing out of every sentence, but just ignore it. An update is better than no update... right?

So remember a few weeks back when I told you about "getting out there?" Well, Julia Mary is getting out there again. Not only did I finally join the rest of the world in texting yesterday . But I also, moved into the realm of Twitter!

Part of the reason I waited so long to get twitter was partly becuase I didn't know why people would want to follow the mundane things of my day. Maybe it's just me but reallllly....who cares when I brush my teeth, or what I eat for lunch?! Despite my reservations, eventually I caved to the strong continual persistance of my friends.

The icing on the cake is when it's a behind the scenes video. Those are my favorite for sure!!!

Anyways, remember the fun photo shoot I did with Grace and fellow photographers, Tim Cothran, Melissa Oholendt, and Joel Nelson? Well, Joel besides being a great photographer is also a master videographer. Throughout the night he took footage of us shooting and just being silly. A few weeks later he compiled all of our pictures with his video footage and waaaaalah, A VIDEO!

Vacation

The day before I left Colorado, a group of us from camp visited the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. The campus was breathtaking!

I guess it didn't hurt that the campus was situated among the mountains.

The highlight of the campus is their chapel. Will someone plllllease get married here and let me photograph their wedding? Okay, great!

Can you imagine what our world would be like if everyone followed this principle?

All the buildings had walls like this with different colored mosaics. This one was my favorite!

If you thought the outside of the chapel was cool just wait til you see the inside...

I've known Katy since we were little. We both grew up in the same neighborhood and our families were always close friends! She's graduating this year and asked me if I'd take her senior pictures.

Katy is a pro at the violin and frequently plays in the Minnesota Youth Symphonies. She also enjoys playing soccer and running track. She's considering Ave Maria University in Florida, and hopes to become an orthodontist.

Out of the Office

The summer is already coming to an end. I cannot believe it! My summer has been filled with relaxation, fun times, exciting changes, and many vacations. Tomorrow I embark on my last summer vacation.... a two week worldview camp called, Summit. It will be held in the beautiful mountains of Colorado! I love Colorado! Two weeks is a long time but I have no doubt it will fly by. I can't wait to meet new people, and reconnect with old friends. I'll have limited internet access while I'm gone, so unfortunately I won't be able to blog. But when I get home... watch out because I have many exciting things coming up. A blog post at 8:45 pm? Why not! I'm most productive in the evenings anyways.

You'll probably remember Alex, because I took his senior pictures a few weeks ago. Well, Alex, his sister Kristine, and their friend Simone have started a videography business called, ASK Entertainment. They're very talented and I can't wait to see where their business will go in the coming months and years! Recently, they asked me if I'd take some fun headshots for their business. Of course I said yes!

We met at the Sculpture Gardens in Minneapolis. It's a popular spot for photographers. I hadn't been there before, but once I started walking around I could see why it's so popular. I mean, who wouldn't want to shoot with big, fun, random structures like this?

Kids Kids Kids!

First of all I want to stay that I really really really admire Amy Wenzel and other children photographers. Photographing kids is definitely a gift! Whenever I do kid or family shoots I just hold my breath... cause you never know what's gonna happen! It's kind of like a rollercoaster... fun and exciting!

This past Monday I did a shoot for some friends from church. Great, fun, adventurous family. Love em! They have six adorable kids and this shoot was nothing short of amazing! Pretty sure I got some of my favorite kid shots ever!

Six kids smiling all once. Not as easy as it looks. I kept pressing the shutter and Mom did an interpretive dance with leaves behind me. Whatever works right?!

The girls are all so beautiful! This is the oldest she's 11.

At this point in the shoot one of the older girls spoke up..."good thing pictures don't have sound!" There was a lot of hair pulling, screaming, and fussing. But I looove how this one turned out! Photography can do that though... make a not so perfect moment look fun.

I think I was a little shutter button happy during this shoot... 1,400 pictures in an hour! Can't help it sometimes! :D

People often think we're twins... we're not, but we are related! This is Ellen my younger sister. She's graduating this year. I cannot believe it!!! Anyone else out there have siblings younger than them graduate? Was it weird? It is for me!

She loves playing basketball, reading, and watching old classics [my kinda girl].

I think this is my favorite. It's so hard to choose though!

This past Sunday, Melissa Oholendt invited me to a bridal shoot downtown with her friend, Grace [an amazing album designer], and fellow photographers Joel Nelson and Tim Cothran. They all do amazing work and it was so much fun doing this shoot with them.

By the time we got downtown it was really really dark. Maybe not ideal for a natural light shooter with a little 50mm 1.8 lens. Still had fun though!

This was typical... balancing the camera on my knees, holding my breath [it really works!], then pressing the shutter! I might have to invest in a flash or better camera\lens. Can you imagine me looking like this at an evening wedding? Ahh..NO! Again...thanks Joel for another action shot ;)

Getting Out There

While at the internship with Kristen Leigh we talked about marketing. I seriously cannot believe how far God has taken me in just over two weeks. Doors are opening, I'm meeting tons of talented people, and I'm connecting with those of you who comment on my blog! You're all amaaaazing!

Thank-you Thank-you Thank-you!!!!

There are a few things that are definitely helping me...

-Blogging. I love reading blogs and connecting with other photographers. It's kind of like an eye into their world... I LOVE IT! Unfortunately, I'm no Jamie Delaine and Jasmine* blogger. They're amazing writers and blog like everyday! I'm that kind of blogger in my dreams! But I'll continue to blog because it's a fun way to share pictures\stories, and see how far you've come [just go back in your archives someday for fun]!

-Website! I'm sooo excited for this. I had finished a website but after talking with some friends we decided it wasn't my brand so I started over. Yes people. Deleted my finished product and completely started from scratch! I almost pulled out my hair, so much work and time, to then just destroy it. But now I can look back and can say it was sooo worth it. I have a few finishing touches to make and then I'll publish my new website! It's soooo me, and my brand! Cannot wait! Here's a preview.

Lastly... beloved facebook! So many people are on facebook. This might sound cheessy but I really don't think my business would be what it is today if it weren't for facebook. The ability to put pictures online and show all my friends has been invaluable. I have gotten more than 80% of my business from people seeing my pictuers on facebook. Like I said... invaluable! I started out with just a personal page. But lately I knew I wanted something more, and a way to connect with more people who aren't my "friends". I have a Julia Mary fan page in the works. I'll be adding updates, promotions, and pictures [DUH!]. It's not up yet [technical difficulties today :\] but I'll announce when it is!

I know Twitter is another great way to market yourself. Also, very important. But I still don't have texting. Yup still living in the stone age over here ;) Oh, do you wanna see my phone?...

Isn't it great? Top of the line, ya know? Once I get texting I'll be sure to start tweeting or twittering and whatever it is!

Lastly I'm in the middle of developing some fabulous business cards using Moo! Definitely check them out. I'm going with the mini cards! Woohoo. I feel so official with business cards!

Tony and Chelsea

The day threatened rain but nothing could damper the excitement inside St. Patricks Catholic church. As I walked into the brides dressing room I could hear lots of excited laughter. Chelsea was so eager to finally marry the man of her dreams. Their story began at a grocery store. Tony worked in one department and Chelsea in the other. Eventually their paths crossed and love quickly blossomed. Months later while at a family get together Tony proposed to Chelsea and of course she said, "Yes!" The engagement lasted two years. "It was a long time, but well worth it," remarked Tony.

Where do I start... this guy is out of this world amazing and talented! Alex and I have known each other for as long as I can remember. When he asked me to take his senior pictures I was more than happy to oblige. He enjoys acting [he's really good!], tennis and cross country! He has also started his own videography business, ASK Entertainment, and does photography on the side. He's so talented and I can't wait to see where he'll go!

When we were driving to the Guthrie Theater downtown, there was pouring rain and hail! We took pictures inside for about an hour and by the time we came outside the storm had passed and the sun was starting to come out!

I typically don't shoot wide angle shots. But I couldn't resist putting these up because I just love them!

How it all began...

Growing up my favorite subject was always art but that wasn't because I enjoyed it the most or because I was good at it. Rather because it was the easiest subject with the least homework. Bad motives I know.

During highschool I wasn't involved in sports, drama, or many extracurricular activities so my parents encouraged me to find something I'd enjoy doing. While skimming through the newspapers AD's one Sunday afternoon I came across something that caught my eye. It was the bright clear image of a camera. Not just any camera though. A BIG one with the lens that stuck out of the front! I'd always been jealous of people with big cameras... mostly because they always looked SO cool carrying them around. Somehow, I convinced my parents that I NEEDED that camera. Days later I stood at the National Camera Exchange store counter as my Dad bought my first camera.... a Nikon D50.

Well I got home and took pictures. Lot's of pictures! I had no idea what I was doing, but something about photography intrigued me, so I just kept pluggin along!

Later that year in August 2007, our family flew out to California to visit my Mom's sister, her husband and their kids. While talking with my cousins I found out that they were photographers. They strongly enoucraged me to pursue photography more and start my business.

Sidenote: I made my sister do a photoshoot for me while in Califonia. I was SOOO overly proud of this pictures when we were done.

Now I look at them and they just make me humble! Thank goodness that I've moved on from my Picnik photo processing days!

Anyways... I traveled back to Minnesota and did pursue photography more. But quickly threw the idea of starting my own business out the window, convincing myself I wasn't good enough, I was too young, and it'd be too hard.

Well as time went on I found photography blogs and was BLOWN away! I didn't know it was humanly possbile to take pictures like Jessica Claire or Jasmine*. Eventually the idea of starting a business became a far off dream. I signed up for OSP and DPS, and read every online tutorial imaginable. At this point I knew I wanted to start a business but I didn't know how and still didn't think I was quite ready. I prayed that God would give me wisdom on what steps to take next, and specifically prayed for an internship. The next night I stumbled upon Kristen Leigh's blog. I had followed her stuff on and off, so when I found her blog again I began reading. She had JUST advertised the "Summertime with Kristen Leigh" internship that she was doing. I immediately applied. One week later she e-mailed me to say I'd been accepted. And the rest... well it's history!

My advice to anyone starting out like I was [and still am].

-Do an internship! It'll boost your confidence a million times over. Before going to Kristen's I was SO nervous about charging people, and I didn't feel like I knew enough to get started. Now I'm home and I'm confident in where my business is right now and where it's going. Sure I'm still nervous sometimes but I go for it anyways. Another reason to go to an internship. They're just plain fun!

- NETWORK!!! NETWORK!!! NETWORK!!! Get in contact with other photographers in your area. For the longest time I thought I was the only photographer in the state of MN with the photography style I liked. I couldn't have been more wrong! There is a huge network of photographers here in MN and the ones I've talked to so far have been SO willing to help and encourage me. I just went out to ice cream with Melissa Oholendt last night. One of the sweetest photographers I've ever met! She started her business back in January so we're both still very new at this stuff! It was so great meeting and talking to her last night. Networking works. Really it does!

Of course it's more than possible to start a business without networking and interning but it's so helpful. I strongly encourage you to do it if you have the opportunity!

So that's my story!

This girl needs no introduction. She's Kristen Leigh!!!

It was such a blessing being around Kristen for five whole days. She's a great remodel to her younger siblings, a wise and generous business woman, and just plain fun to be around! The more we talked the more we had in common.... both never had a boyfriend, both homeschooled, both love country music, both love to eat, I could go on and on! It was so fun taking head shots for her new website and blog. She's a natural!

Typically the photographer tries to make the clients laugh but Kristen was so funny she had me and the other two interns continually laughing!

Irene Carole "Ica"

I first met Ica, or "Miss Fashionista" as I like to call her, in the Snyder family kitchen. She came in with the biggest smile on her face, and gave me a bear hug. She's full of energy, joy, and encouragement. She added so much to the internship and I'm so glad I got to spend time with her. Her brand turned out so great [it didn't hurt that she went to school for design before going into photography]. Definitely check her out!

Sweet, Funny, Thoughtful.

That's the kind of girl Jessica Shae is. I first started talking to Jessica after finding out that we had both be accepted into Kristen Leigh's internship. We'd chat photography on Facebook, discuss the latest blogs we had found, and share about our business dreams. I had so much fun finally meeting Jessica face to face at the internship. I also learned so much from watching her during all the photo shoots we did. She's so talented and I can't wait to see what God has in store for her! If you live in Texas I definitely recommend her.

Jessica and Neil have been married for five years, and have two beautiful kids. Recently, Jessica decided to pull out her wedding dress one more time and do a shoot. I looove when couples do this! We started the shoot at a scenic overlook near Fredricks.

Who I am

A large focus of our time at Kristen's was branding. Finding our own style, and marketing ourselves that way. Some words I used to describe my style were: timeless, vintage, bold, and editorial. Thursday night Kristen took headshots for our website and blog.

She's amazing!!!

I'm so pleased with the results. These pictures describe me perfectly! I'm so glad they're on my blog and I know they'll go perfect on the website I'm currently designing.

On a completely different note... thanks to everyone who's been coming to my blog everyday to support me! All of you know I love photography but that's it! The purpose of this post is to change that. Here are some random and fun facts about me:

1. I love lists, and will write something [I've already accomplished] down just so I can cross it off. It makes me feel good.

2.I enjoy politics.

3. I like the smell of sharpie markers.

4. I'd rather be hot than cold.

5. I play my music loud in the car with my windows up [not down], even in the summer.

6. I'd prefer cleaning the toilet to vacuuming.

7. I really like mirrors and have 13 in my room.

Joe and Janette

Yes couples are in love. But Joe and Janette are really in love.

They have got to be one of the sweetest and most genuine couple I've ever met. When you meet them you know you're meeting the real thing. The way he looks into her eyes. The way he whispers sweet "somethings" into her ear that make her smile.

Internship

The memories of last week still make me smile.

Crazy ideas are still flowing through my head. They make me excited cause I know that they will rock my photography business in ways I never though possible.

This past week I spent four days in lovely Maryland at the Snyder abode for a four day internship with Kristen Leigh. Let me tell you...this girl knows photography and business. I was so blessed that she picked me to be apart of her fabulous internship.

Our days were filled with "teaching time" in the mornings. Blog\website design in the afternoons. The evenings included photoshoots in downtown Frederick, the beautiful countryside, and Urbana's county carnival.

Besides the photography side of things Kristen showed us, Adam's Morgan, the nightlife of D.C. and the land of Jumbo Pizza.

Look at the size of that pizza. I don't know if I should be proud or concerned that I was able to eat more than 3/4th of it by myself!

Next we stopped at Cali Yogurt. Nothing like a frozen yogurt treat to top off a fun evening! [L-R, Ica, Jessica, and Kristen].

Above everything else I enjoyed spending time with Ica, Jessica and Kristen. We laughed together and made silly dance videos. These girls are so talented, and I can't wait to see where God takes them in the coming months and years. At the beginning the week they were fellow people in the photography industry but now I'm proud to call them friends!

I'm so excited to introduce my new blog specifically for my photography business, Julia Mary!

This past Sunday I flew in Gaithersburg, Maryland for a four day internship with Kristen Leigh! It's already Wednesday and my brain is over flowing with new information and exciting ideas! I cannot believe how blessed I am!

I'm so excited for the beginning of this blog and all that God has in store for me! I have so many more exciting things to share with ya'll [I picked that up from the intern from Texas]! Can't wait!!!
